3D (3 day) Day three- Environment

Today, I worked in the 3D classroom experimenting with environment, for my environment I decided to focus on surroundings and in more particular rooms (house), and I decided to make a open floor plan for a living room out of cardboard that I cut to size that I made into both the surrounding walls and furniture within the floor plan.

I began this floor plan by finding a living room open floor plan template and enlarging the picture on a Word document so that I could tailor it to fit an A3 sheet of paper the right way so that I could build the walls upon that, as well as the furniture. I firstly began by measuring each of the walls and cutting them all at the same height so that I had all four sides (walls) for my room, I then began to cut out the door on the front wall, three windows on the back wall and left the two sides holding it all together with no windows or doors. After removing all areas for doors/windows I secured each wall of the room to the base on top of the template using hot glue and rolls of tape to make sure it dries upright. Then I began to cut the cardboard to create the furniture to do this I cut a few 1 inch x 1 inch strips out of the cardboard to create the bases or each of the furniture pieces making sure that their all uniform and the same. This is one thing that worked well because, by cutting strips before hand to ensure that everything was the same size and cut well saved a lot of time and stopped me from rushing any aspect of it as all measurements had already been done. I then began to cut the same size squares that I did for the base of the arm chairs and cut them in half for the arms and stood them upright for the backs of the chairs.

Once I had cut and glued all of the chairs I cut a smaller square to represent a table in-between the two chairs and a small circle to represent the table in the centre of the room, after finishing to add the tables and chairs I decided to add more such as little lamps made completely out of the same cardboard featured next to the two chairs, and a fire place positioned on the centre of the left wall. To complete my design I decided to add some pink fabric to create lampshades on the lights that I stuck down with hot glue and little curtains on the central window along with a wire curtain pole to emphasise the main window, then to cover the white template on the outside of my floor plan I added a green felt-like fabric to give the impression of grass or some form of surrounding. Although I liked the addition of the green felt fabric around the outside I feel as though the pink fabric i stuck down to create lampshades wasn't executed as well and I should've taken more time so that I could create a much more details design for a lampshade as opposed to an outcome that seems rushed and messy. If I was to do it differently I would take a piece of card and cut it with scissors so that I could roll it up to make a lampshade shape cone and decorate each lampshade singularly focusing more on the smaller details as opposed to rushing to get it completed. Problems that I encountered throughout this project involved when trying to make sure each wall was secured well and straight (upright) that I solved using rolls of tape to hold it and making a lamp shade that I created using a sheet of fabric hot glued on top that although isn't that appealing with the lack of precision that came when making it, it still resembles the lampshade and does what it was meant to do.

Personally, I think that this experiment was really successful because, I achieved crisp edges along which I cut to make the furniture and walls making sure that everything was even and straight showing how much time and care I took to ensure that this floor plan was executed efficiently. However, taking into account my evaluation above I would definitely approach a few things a lot differently such as like stated above approaching the lamp shades a lot differently as well as, the fireplace on the left wall as I could've removed that and not included it to begin with. Showing that by changing a few things such as the curtains and lampshades I could improve the whole piece a lot more. To develop my work further I could do multiple rooms all connected together and focus purely on the layout and ways in which the rooms will fit together. I chose to use cardboard as it's a recyclable material that I have recycled and used in a way it has been completely transformed into something else.
