3D- (3 day) Day two : Light

Today, I worked in the 3D classroom experimenting with light and shadow using only paper, to see how sheets of paper can be transformed into something completely knew and both allow light through the paper and create a textured shadow against the surrounding.

I began creating a flower-like light out of paper, I created this light by cutting petal like shapes out of cartilage paper and printer paper to make some petals thicker compared to others. I then curled each petal singularly using scissors as though I was going to shred the paper so that it created a realistic petal like affect. I stuck down each petal singularly using a hot glue gun to make sure each one is sealed onto the clingfilm that I laid underneath over the top of a purple bowl. To create the centre of the flower i rolled up card tightly making them different size based on the width and height of each one to show variety and create the illusion of a realistic flower centre, that I then stuck down upright using hot glue.

I think that this is successful because I created a realistic effect using only paper that allowed the right amount of light through the paper and created a glowy effect to the flower petals through the space where the non cartilage paper petals were placed. I think that the curling effect I created using scissors on each of the singular petals made it look a lot more realistic and made it appear natural. What I think didn't work so well was the clingfilm wrap underneath as I didn't tape it down to the bowl tight enough so the creases in the plastic cling film were melting from the heat of the hot glue. If I was to recreate this piece I would use an alternative base plastic as opposed to the cling film such as a plastic food bag so that the plastic is slightly thicker and will be less likely to melt so fast.

I believe that my practice with shadow and light could be improved upon by trying to create a geometrical design and take it a completely new direction to really experiment using the paper in a less natural, fluent way, approaching it in a technical way ensuring that it is precise with sharp edges showing how well constructed each 3D shape is. I chose to use paper as my project task was to experiment with light and dark using paper, so following the brief I used cartilage paper to restrict the light, then printer paper for areas where the light will be less restricted. The only problems I had when constructing this piece was trying to get the paper petals to stick against the plastic with the hot glue without burning myself, to solve this problem I used the end of a pencil to press the petals against the plastic.
