Fine Art- Day three: Hand, Space, Face

Today, I worked in the Fine Art classroom working with all the processes I have learnt the past few days to create a final piece based on memory, my personality and my self portrait, which led me to decide on creating a piece themed purely around my younger self specifically my younger self positioned within the photo my Bamps had taken of me years ago.

To start off this piece I began by nailing up the curtain against the wall of the studio space and then I began to paint starting at the tree in the left hand side corner of the curtain, then I started to add the texture of the grass behind it by watering down different shades of green ranging light-dark. That created a  textured background replicating the background within the picture. I think that the way the paint spread through the curtain on the tree made a really effective oak textured affect and added a lot of detail just from the way the paint naturally spread up the curtain. What I think didn't work well was how the texture at the top of the curtain with the green was a lot more detailed and as it progresses downwards it seems a lot more rushed with less detail. If I was to do this again I could spend more time adding details with a bigger flat brush to emphasise the details of light and dark towards the bottom, I think that the background was successful because it replicated the texture of the tree and the green grass that laid behind it I just think I could've spent more time on it.

Once I had created the background I started working on the painting of a life sized younger me, I started this piece by sketching out roughly the main components of the body from t shirt, to shoes, to the head/headband and the trousers. I mainly started to add colour to this piece using a cloth and just freely slapping the colour on to create the main structure and colour to the piece, including the colour to the hawaiian flower necklace and headband. What went really well with this piece was when I let go and used the rag to add a light wash across the clothes and for the flowers around the neck as it gave a good effect with how the flowers are typically fabric and delicate. Something that I think didn't work as well was the face as I kept adding too much paint to it and it became too layered and thick making it seem more like skin that had a rash as opposed to young and youthful skin. Despite the skin seeming patchy and red I think that it was successful because it captured my vision and everything that was apart of that memory and that was featured within the photo.
