Illustration- One day: Character re-design

Today, I worked in the illustration classroom designing digitally the body of the warrior then adding on the outfit using much more physical materials such as, coloured pencils and watercolour.

To start my design I began by drawing out the base of my character digitally using my ipad and the Procreate app, I started by drawing a black outline of the figure I wanted as the base model design for my transformation of myself into something else. After I had drawn the main black outline of the figure I filled it in with a light skin colour to give it the colour to the skin as well as a slight tint of a pink to the lips to emphasise the fact it's based off me. I feel as though my first design worked really well and helped with visualising where I was going to take the designs and what type of designs to do. What worked really well was drawing the outline first and then using the colour dropper to completely fill the figure with the colour, I think that the figure itself was drawn very well as well because, I tried to replicate my own figure as well as possible and tried to incorporate a ponytail to elevate the design and likeness. My base design could've been improved by adding more detail to the sword/weapons although this was only the design that I built upon I could've elevated it more by paying more attention to the smaller details. If I was to do this again I would draw the swords as well as the figure with the fullness of it so that I could just adapt the swords per design with extra added details.

The first design I created was inspired by Mulan because beens I was creating warrior designs I wanted to create a design that was inspired by an already existent female warrior, and take inspiration from her. I tried to focus on the red and gold like colours associated with Mulan within the film as well as the hand cuffs being red and gold to represent the battles she faces. What worked well within this design was the use of watercolour on the skirt/bottom half of the design as it made the skirt appear to be thin and floaty as though it was sheer, giving a sense of transparency and femininity. However I feel as though beens I was basing it off of Mulan who was a Chinese warrior I could've escalated the design a lot more by following the idea of a Chinese warrior and possibly adding more detail in areas  based off of the symbols and details that are engraved into the Chinese warriors armour. If I was to recreate this again I would definitely incorporate as many aspects of a traditional Chinese warrior armour as I can and really indulge in the culture and create a piece that replicates both the history and culture of the Chinese warriors. I think that this was overall successful as it's achieved the warrior look I wanted while incorporating the red and gold that I associate with Mulan but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

The second design I created was much more inspired by a mystical viking warrior, I tried to add a lot more detail into this piece and incorporate the navy blue with elements of gold to add to the navy. I tried to make this design a lot more structured as opposed to showing off more areas of the body and make it more crafted with laces where it's tied down the side to resemble the viking era while approaching it from a mystical stance. In my opinion the navy blue worked really well within this design and the structured corset with straps to compliment the figure of the warrior adds to the design making it stand out. If I was to do this again I wouldn't change much I would mainly clean up the lines however. one thing that didn't work so well was how there was so little gold I feel as though if I worked back in with gold and added to the design it would complete it and improve it a lot. I think that this was a successful because I like how the entire piece formed and complimented each other especially with the fluidity and movement shown in the skirt area, this is definitely my favourite piece of the three designs.

My third and final design is inspired by a Greek goddess where the main focus colour was gold to emphasise the mass use of gold and white for clothing within ancient Greece. This decision is very similar to the first design except the skirt is split in multiple places and is a very sheer nude/white colour and the top is like a brassiere  that's gold in colour with thick straps that are inspired by the off the shoulder draped clothing warn in ancient Greece. The skirt of this design is definitely my favourite skirt of the three purely because I added the shading to the skirt to create the effect of movement and illusion of folds in the skirt that's draped over the skin. However, I don't like the top as it looks unflattering and less Greek goddess, warrior and more like a brassiere which doesn't follow the inspiration I was trying to use. If I was to recreate this design I would add a more flattering top that suits the inspiration possibly adding the same drapes as the skirt to the shoulder straps of the top and I would finish painting on the shoes to make them look realistic and lace-like. I think that this was partially successful because the top was very unsuccessful due to it being unflattering, doesn't fit in with the inspiration or the design at all but, the skirt was executed extremely well with the perfect amount of colour and the right colour palette to represent the transparency of the skirt.
